My Happy Place

HAPPY Saturday bitches!

How is EVERYONE today?

First things first... We don't typically write or talk about children here at the "Corner," HOWEVER, today, a certain little someone turns TWO! We would like to give a warm "Kev's Corner" HAPPY BIRTHDAY shout out to L'il Naomi, who is just a lamb. A British lamb at that. Simply precious. As I told her "mum," Jean, I am the WORST gay uncle (or "guncle" as my other darling "niece" calls me) EVER for not sending anything. (They live overseas though, so it's a real pain in the ass (or arse), if you know what I mean.) Anyhoo, HAPPY BIRTHDAY L'il Naomi! (I sure do miss you.)

Yesterday I said I was going to write about the "True Colors" tour, which was created by Cyndi Lauper (whom I l-o-v-e, love) as a way to "give back" to those who have supported her throughout the years while raising awareness of the issues facing the gay and lesbian community. (You know, can't marry, can't join the military, subjected to hate crimes, etc...) Instead of writing about it, I am going to take the easy way out and simply say, click HERE (bitches) so you can read about it from the people who really know what they are talking about. The "True Colors" tour made a stop in Atlanta on Thursday evening but "Kev" could not make the show, unfortunately, because, well, he didn't have a ticket... If YOU attended the show, let us know about it! (I was sorry I missed it.)

Click HERE to watch Cyndi Lauper talk about (and perform) "True Colors."

The "True Colors" tour was also sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, an organization, for those of you unfamiliar with the agency, is the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) equal rights organization in the United States, with more than 700,000 members and supporters. The HRC "envisions an America where GLBT people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community."

We will add a link to their official site in the coming days (in case you feel inclined to learn more about them). Our super good friend (B ex BFF), David, volunteers many hours to this organization so we have asked him to write a little "sumpin' sumpin'" for all of you.

All of this talk of the "True Colors" tour, as well as the HRC, reminds me of Matthew Shepard. Everyone has heard Matthew Shepard's story, right? In case you haven't, Matthew Shepard was a promising 21-year-old college student studying at the University of Wyoming. In 1998, Matthew was tied to a split-rail fence, beaten and left to die in the cold of the night simply because he was gay. Almost 18 hours later he was found by a cyclist who initially mistook him for a scarecrow. What kind of gay blog would this be if we did not mention Matthew Shepard or the Matthew Shepard Foundation? Not a very good one.

The Matthew Shepard Foundation was created by Matthew's parents to "replace hate with understanding" through education and awareness. Along with the link to the HRC, we will also add a link to the Matthew Shepard Foundation so you can read Matthew's story as well as the goals of the foundation. While quite tragic and sad, Matthew's death has put a face and name to legislation that (if passed) "would add protections based on sexual orientation or gender identity to existing laws that target violence because of race and religion." Hopefully something good will come of something so unthinkable and violent. (I am the guy who welled up with tears when Paris Hilton was sent to jail, so you can imagine how I feel when I read about Matthew Shepard.)

While you may not hear of them on your evening news, hate crimes still exist. Every issue of "The Advocate" includes incidences of crimes committed against gays, lesbians and transgender individuals throughout the country.

Click HERE to learn more about hate crimes and to see what YOU can do. (THANKS to "Kitten" for sending this video.)

Finally, the photo at the top of the post was taken at my "HAPPY PLACE" (Starbucks) on Shaftesbury Avenue in London's West End. Although this was taken more than a year ago, I love it and wanted to post it here. When I look at it, it takes me back to that time and place (which I loved).

I hope you ALL have a GREAT Saturday!

"Kev" will be back, well, when he's back! Enjoy your weekend.

Hugs and Kisses!

"Kev"

To all at Kev's Corner. Happy PRIDE! I did attend the True Colors Tour and it was amazing. Erasure and Cyndi were great. Margaret Cho was hilarious. HRC was in full force and we all signed the petition for the Matthew Shepard Act. I managed to hold the tears to a about three incidences. Gay, I know but it there were several emotional moments.

Happy Pride to all. Hugs and Kisses- Patrick a/k/a Mr. P

HEY!
I am glad you got to attend the show! (It's like "continuing ed" for gays, right?) That show alone fulfills all of the (as Princess would say) "GP's" for the remainder of 2007 (so you can butch it up now and when people question your gay factor, just take out your pictures from the show. You DID take pictures, right? You can still redeem 50% of the value by showing your ticket stub). You can only claim "GP's" for this show through next year at this time, since the show is an annual event. (It isn't very gay to say you went in 2007, for example, if the year is 2012.) See the back of the ticket for official rules, i.e., claiming GP's! My ass-istant at the office said, "What's this "True Colors" show about? Who wants to see THESE people?" (I SO want to fire her...) Seriously, I was bummed I forgot about it until about 30 minutes before show time. I can't read the Matthew Shepard site (it is too sad). He is to the gays what Laci Peterson is to young, cute wives/mothers. A poster child of sorts. It takes someone young and attractive to raise awareness (which is sort of sad). I guarantee you, if someone tied me to a fence, there would be no bill named after me. Anyhoo, I could have written a whole other post here! Thanks for stoppin in!

P.S., yes HAPPY PRIDE! (I don't know why the gays say this to each other, but Steve and I call one another EVERY year just to say "Happy Pride (gurl)" (like it's Christmas).

Are you kidding? If someone tied you to a fence (I can't believe I'm typing that) all of us at the corner would be fighting to be the one to spearhead the Kev Bill. Trust me. It would be a great bill.

Kev-

I would join Princess in the legislation as well. Why do we say Happy Pride? I'm the new gay... you should be able to explain it. Spent they day in the park and saw Jason & deMarco. Whew! Now they are a hot couple! Hope you are having a good weekend.

If Kev, the staff at Kev's Corner, or any of you ATLers want to venture out for the parade, we will be watching from Zocolo on 10th. I know the staff at Kev's has prime viewing location but thought I'd throw it out there.

Must go now. Blake's is calling my name. ;-)

HAPPY PRIDE. Don't know why but Happy Pride.

Mr. P.

HAPPY PRIDE to you too! No, I don't know why we say that. Hope you enjoyed the festivities! (Did you see Deborah Gibson?)
